Food manufacturers who make artificial sweeteners promote the benefits of using their products as part of a weight loss program. However neglect to even tell you the risks associated with their products. Having said that, we have seen several independent scientific studies of sugar substitutes and many have reached the same conclusions: stay away from them no matter what.

While many of the manufactured  sugar substitutes are generally lower in calories, the overall health difficulties they could lead to simply aren’t actually worth the benefits they offer. Several artificial sweeteners are even worse for you than sugar as confirmed by clinical studies.

Consumption of these sugar substitutes gained momentum in the 1950’s. With real sugar, at the very least you know what it’s made from – sugar cane or sugar beets. This is not the reality with artificial sweeteners. For instance, saccharin is manufactured out of a coal tar derivative.

Yup it is because of chemistry that we can be grateful for the existence of sugar substitutes. They have also been around for a very long time, over a century in fact.

In this post we highlight three good reasons why you should never  use artificial sugar substitutes.

An Increase In Weight

Hang on a moment! Aren’t artificial sweeteners designed to help you lose weight? That’s what the manufacturers would love you to think, however the opposite holds true and supported by many research results. What typically occurs is that the result in a metabolic disturbance. By consuming or drinking something made out of real sugar, your brain typically produces the hormone dopamine which signals your stomach when you’re full. Without having real sugar, dopamine will not be released and you don’t receive the signal to stop eating. Although artificial sweeteners may have much less calories compared to real sugar, they don’t have exactly the same impact in your body as real sugar, and cause you to overindulge.

Heart Disease

Drinking diet drinks every day sweetened with aspartame will increase your risk of dying from a stroke or heart attack by 61%. This was the conclusion presented in 2011 by a study created by both Columbia University and the University of Miami and introduced at the International Stroke Conference.Even though the artificial sweetener specifically isn’t responsible for the increased risk, its impact on your body leads to an increase of calories by means of over eating which leads to weight gain and Type 2 diabetes.

Allergic Reactions

In individuals allergic to sulfa medications, consuming Splenda may cause allergic reactions ranging from mild itchiness to hives, stomach cramps to diarrhea, and in some cases anaphylactic responses such as difficulty breathing, throat closure, a drop in blood pressure levels and convulsions.

Should you be experiencing any one of these signs and symptoms or any other side effects, try removing sucralose (as well as all artificial sweeteners) from your diet and see if your condition improves. If that’s the case, you might have discovered a source of your allergic reactions. Always remember the whole idea is to not replace sugar with an artificial or even a natural sugar replacement, I see these as transitional. The idea is to get you to enjoy natural healthy and wholefoods like nature intended.

By using artificial sweeteners it is not worth the risk from the health problems they could eventually lead to. Regarding your health, you’re much better off using natural sweeteners. Whilst I recommend getting rid of most sugars from your diet I do endorse the use of xylitol and stevia occasionally.
